BROTHER TONER HELP

Brother TN243 & TN247 Toner Reset Guide

Installed a new Brother TN243 or TN247 toner cartridge but your printer still shows “Replace Toner”, “Toner Low” or a cartridge error? The toner counter may not have reset correctly.

TN243 & TN247 For standard and high-capacity Brother colour toner cartridges.
Counter Reset Useful when a new toner is fitted but the printer still asks for replacement toner.
Front Cover Open The printer must remain switched on with the front cover open during the reset.
Reset Each Colour If several cartridges were replaced, reset each colour individually.

Before You Start

This reset is only needed when the printer has failed to update the toner counter correctly after a new cartridge has been installed.

Check these first:
  • Make sure the toner cartridge is correct for your printer.
  • Remove all orange clips, seals and protective packaging.
  • Make sure the toner is seated correctly in the drum unit.
  • Make sure the printer is switched on.
  • Open the front cover fully before starting the reset sequence.
  • If the printer shows a drum warning rather than a toner warning, you may need a drum reset instead.

STEP-BY-STEP

How to Reset a Brother TN243 or TN247 Toner Counter

Follow the steps in order. The most important part is choosing the correct colour and cartridge capacity before confirming the reset.

STEP 1

Open the front cover

With the new toner cartridge installed, switch the printer on and open the front cover. The display may show a message such as “Cover is Open”.

Keep the front cover open throughout the reset sequence.
STEP 2

Press Back and Cancel together

Press and hold the Back and Cancel buttons together for a couple of seconds.

Back + Cancel → Release → Press Back

Release both buttons and immediately press Back again. The toner reset menu should appear.

Don't worry if it takes a few attempts The timing can be slightly fiddly. If the menu does not appear, keep the front cover open and repeat the button sequence slowly and carefully.
STEP 3

Select the correct toner reset code

The printer should now show toner reset codes such as M.TNR-HC or K.TNR-STD.

Use the up and down buttons to select the code for the cartridge you have replaced, then press OK.

K
Black
C
Cyan
M
Magenta
Y
Yellow
STEP 4

Confirm the toner reset

After selecting the correct reset code and pressing OK, the printer will ask you to confirm. Select Yes.

STEP 5

Check the reset has been accepted

The printer should display Accepted. You can then close the front cover and allow the printer to return to its normal ready screen.

If you have replaced more than one colour, repeat the entire reset procedure for each cartridge.

RESET CODES

Brother TN243 & TN247 Toner Reset Codes

Choose the code that matches both the colour and capacity of the toner cartridge you installed.

Cartridge Colour Capacity Reset Code
TN247BK Black High capacity K.TNR-HC
TN247C Cyan High capacity C.TNR-HC
TN247M Magenta High capacity M.TNR-HC
TN247Y Yellow High capacity Y.TNR-HC
TN243BK Black Standard capacity K.TNR-STD
TN243C Cyan Standard capacity C.TNR-STD
TN243M Magenta Standard capacity M.TNR-STD
TN243Y Yellow Standard capacity Y.TNR-STD
Choose the correct capacity TN247 is the high-capacity cartridge, so choose the HC code. TN243 is the standard-capacity cartridge, so choose the STD code. Do not reset a different colour or capacity.

Example: Replacing a TN247 Cyan Cartridge

TN247 is high capacity and Cyan is represented by C, so you would select C.TNR-HC. If you also replaced the magenta cartridge, complete the cyan reset first and then repeat the procedure using M.TNR-HC.

TROUBLESHOOTING

What If the Brother Toner Reset Doesn't Work?

The reset menu does not appear

Make sure the printer is switched on and the front cover is fully open. Press Back and Cancel together, release them, then immediately press Back again. The timing can take several attempts.

I cannot find the correct toner code

Check whether you installed a TN243 standard-capacity cartridge or TN247 high-capacity cartridge, then match the first letter to the colour: K for black, C for cyan, M for magenta or Y for yellow.

The printer still says Replace Toner

Check that you reset the correct colour and selected the correct STD or HC capacity. If several colours were replaced, reset each one separately.

The printer says Drum or Drum End Soon

This is a different counter. Brother laser printers often use separate toner cartridges and drum units, so a drum warning normally requires a drum reset or drum replacement rather than a toner reset.

The printer shows Cartridge Error

Remove the toner and drum assembly and make sure the toner is correctly seated in the drum unit. Check again for packaging, sealing strips or protective clips before reinstalling the assembly.

I replaced more than one colour

Reset each colour individually. For example, reset C.TNR-HC for cyan, complete the process, then repeat it for M.TNR-HC if you also replaced magenta.

Toner Reset or Drum Reset?

Brother printers frequently use a toner cartridge and drum unit as two separate consumables. Replacing the toner does not reset a drum warning, and resetting the toner counter will not clear a genuine drum message.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Brother TN243 & TN247 Reset FAQs

Why does my Brother printer still say Replace Toner after fitting a new cartridge?

The toner counter may not have reset when the new cartridge was installed. If the cartridge is correct and properly fitted, use the reset procedure above to reset the counter for the affected colour.

What is the difference between TN243 and TN247?

TN243 cartridges are the standard-capacity version, while TN247 cartridges are high-capacity. This is why the printer uses STD reset codes for TN243 and HC reset codes for TN247.

What does K.TNR-HC mean?

K represents black, TNR means toner and HC means high capacity. K.TNR-HC is therefore the reset code for the high-capacity TN247 black toner.

Do I need to reset all four toner colours?

Only reset cartridges that have been replaced or whose toner counter has not updated correctly. If more than one cartridge has been replaced, reset each affected colour separately.

Will this reset fix a Brother drum warning?

No. Toner and drum counters are separate. If your printer displays Drum, Replace Drum or Drum End Soon, use the appropriate Brother drum reset procedure instead.

What if the reset still does not work?

Use Chat Assist or contact our support team with your printer model, toner cartridge code and the exact message shown on the printer. If possible, include a photo of the printer display so we can help identify the next step.

Still Having Trouble With Your Brother Toner?

If the reset menu won't appear, you're unsure which code to choose or the printer still refuses to print, ask Chat Assist to continue troubleshooting or contact our UK support team.
