Xerox C320 and C325 Firmware Update Guide

How to check your printer firmware, determine whether bridging firmware is required and safely install the latest Xerox software.

If your Xerox C320 or Xerox C325 displays a message such as toner not recognised, cartridge not detected, supply error or another cartridge communication warning, the printer firmware is one of several things worth checking.

Firmware is the internal software that controls how the printer communicates with its toner cartridges, network connection, control panel and other components. Xerox periodically releases firmware updates containing fixes, security improvements and product changes.

Updating the firmware may help when a recognition problem is connected to older printer software. However, these messages can also be caused by an incorrectly fitted cartridge, a damaged chip, unsuitable toner, protective packaging that has not been removed or a printer hardware fault.

Important Before You Continue

Only download firmware from the official Xerox support website. Check the printer model and current firmware version carefully before installing anything, and never switch the printer off while an update is in progress.

Which Xerox Printers Does This Guide Cover?

This guide covers the following models:

  • Xerox C320 Colour Printer
  • Xerox C325 Colour Multifunction Printer

The firmware files and update process may be shared across these printer families, but you should always use the official Xerox download page and confirm that the selected release lists your exact model.

Do You Need the Bridging Firmware?

Not every Xerox C320 or C325 necessarily requires the bridging firmware.

According to Xerox’s current firmware information, printers running firmware versions from 230.091 through 240.245 must first be updated to the relevant 240.246 bridge release before moving to a newer general firmware release.

Bridge Required

Firmware 230.091 to 240.245

Install the Xerox bridge release first. Allow the printer to complete the update and restart before installing the latest general release.

Check First

Other Firmware Versions

Check the readme supplied with the latest Xerox release. A printer already running a later version may be able to install the latest firmware directly.

Do not guess which route applies. Check the current software version on the printer and read the installation notes supplied with the Xerox firmware download.

How to Check the Current Firmware Version

The exact menu wording can vary slightly according to the installed software version, but you can usually find the firmware information from the printer control panel or its built-in web page.

  1. Open the printer’s Settings menu.
  2. Look for Reports, Device Information or About This Printer.
  3. Print or view the device configuration information.
  4. Make a note of the firmware or software version before downloading an update.

You can also enter the printer’s IP address into a web browser on the same network and look for the device information or firmware section.

Before Starting the Update

  • Connect the printer to a reliable power supply.
  • Do not begin the process during a power interruption or unstable network connection.
  • Allow enough time for the upload, installation and restart.
  • Download the firmware for the exact Xerox model.
  • Read the release notes and installation instructions supplied by Xerox.
  • Extract the downloaded ZIP file before attempting to upload the firmware file.
  • Do not rename or alter the firmware file.
  • Speak to your IT provider first if the printer is managed as part of a business network.

Correct Firmware Update Order

STEP 1

Check the Installed Firmware

Confirm whether the printer falls within the firmware range that requires the bridge release. Do this before uploading any files.

STEP 2

Install the Bridge Release When Required

If the printer is running a version that requires bridging firmware, install the bridge release and wait for the device to finish updating and fully restart.

STEP 3

Install the Latest General Release

Once the required bridge update has completed, or when no bridge is required, install the latest firmware approved by Xerox for your exact printer.

Updating Through the Printer’s Web Page

This is usually the easiest method when the printer is connected to your home or business network.

  1. Find the printer’s IP address from its network settings or configuration report.
  2. Open a web browser on a computer connected to the same network.
  3. Enter the printer’s IP address into the browser address bar.
  4. Sign in as the printer administrator when requested.
  5. Open the device settings and locate the Software Update or Firmware Update area.
  6. Select the option to upload a software or firmware file.
  7. Browse to the extracted Xerox firmware file and select it.
  8. Confirm the upload and proceed with the installation.
  9. Wait for the printer to complete the update and restart.

Do not close the browser, disconnect the printer or switch off the power while the update is being installed. Leave the machine untouched until it has restarted and returned to its normal ready screen.

Updating From a USB Drive

A USB drive can also be used when the printer has a suitable front USB port and the downloaded Xerox instructions support this method.

  1. Use a clean USB drive with sufficient available space.
  2. Download the correct firmware from Xerox.
  3. Extract the ZIP file where applicable.
  4. Copy the required firmware file to the USB drive.
  5. Insert the USB drive into the printer’s front USB port.
  6. Select the firmware file from the USB screen.
  7. Choose Update Code or the equivalent update option.
  8. Confirm that you wish to proceed.
  9. Wait for the printer to complete the update and restart before removing power.

What to Do After Updating

Once the printer has fully restarted, check whether the original message has cleared.

  • Confirm that the printer has returned to its normal ready screen.
  • Check the newly installed firmware version.
  • Remove and carefully refit the toner cartridge.
  • Check that the cartridge is fully seated.
  • Make sure all seals, covers and transport materials have been removed.
  • Confirm that the toner is intended for the exact Xerox printer model and region.
  • Restart the printer once more if the supply message remains.

Will Updating Always Fix a Toner Recognition Error?

No. A firmware update is only one possible solution.

A toner-recognition or supply error can also be caused by:

  • An incorrect toner cartridge
  • A cartridge intended for a different sales region
  • A damaged or contaminated cartridge chip
  • Poor contact between the cartridge and printer
  • Protective packaging left on the cartridge
  • A faulty or damaged toner cartridge
  • A printer sensor, contact or hardware problem

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Xerox C320 or C325 say toner not recognised?

Possible causes include outdated firmware, an incorrectly fitted toner, an unsuitable cartridge, a damaged cartridge chip, poor electrical contact or a printer hardware fault.

Do all Xerox C320 and C325 printers need bridging firmware?

No. The bridge release is required only when the installed firmware falls within a version range identified by Xerox as needing the intermediate update. Check the current Xerox release notes before proceeding.

What happens if my printer needs the bridge release?

Install the approved Xerox bridge release first, allow the printer to finish and restart, and then install the latest general firmware release.

Can I switch the printer off during the update?

No. Interrupting a firmware update can cause the installation to fail and may prevent the printer from starting correctly.

Can I install the firmware over the network?

Yes. The firmware can normally be uploaded using the printer’s built-in web page when the printer and computer are connected to the same network.

Can I update the Xerox firmware using USB?

Xerox provides USB installation instructions for supported devices. Follow the instructions supplied with the firmware release and do not remove the drive or interrupt the printer while it is updating.

Can Xerox firmware be downgraded afterwards?

Downgrading may not be supported after a newer release has been installed. Read the Xerox release information carefully and proceed only when you are satisfied that the update is appropriate.

What should I do if the toner error remains?

Remove and refit the cartridge, confirm that it is correct for the printer, check the cartridge contacts and contact the cartridge supplier with the exact error message if the problem continues.
