HP cartridge messages after installation

Some HP printers may display a message confirming that a non-original or previously used cartridge has been installed. This does not necessarily mean there is a fault. Follow the printer prompts to continue, and contact us if the cartridge is not recognised or printing does not begin normally.

HP cartridge questions

Frequently asked questions

Helpful answers to some of the most common questions about compatible HP ink and toner cartridges.

Are compatible HP cartridges safe to use?

Compatible cartridges are designed to work with the stated HP printer models. Always check the compatibility list on the product page before ordering and follow the installation instructions supplied with the cartridge.

Will compatible cartridges affect my printer warranty?

Using a compatible cartridge does not automatically invalidate a printer warranty. A manufacturer may, however, decline responsibility for damage it can show was directly caused by a third-party cartridge.

Why does my HP printer show a non-HP cartridge message?

HP printers may identify that a cartridge is not an original HP product. In many cases the message can be acknowledged using the printer screen or connected device, after which printing continues normally.

What is the difference between standard and XL HP ink?

XL cartridges contain more ink and normally print more pages than the standard-capacity version. They can be a better choice for customers who print regularly, provided the XL version is listed as compatible with the printer.

How do I know whether my HP printer uses ink or toner?

HP DeskJet, ENVY and OfficeJet printers generally use liquid ink cartridges. HP LaserJet printers use toner powder cartridges. Searching by the complete printer model is the safest way to find the correct product.

What should I do if a new HP cartridge is not recognised?

Remove the cartridge, check that all protective tape or transport seals have been removed, and reinstall it firmly. Restart the printer using its power button. If the message remains, contact us with the printer model, cartridge number and a photograph of the message.
