Understanding Canon ink and toner codes

Canon ink codes often begin with PG, CL or PGI. PG usually identifies a black cartridge, CL identifies a combined colour cartridge, and PGI is commonly used for pigment black ink in Canon PIXMA printers.

Canon toner codes are normally numerical, such as 067H or 069. The letter H usually indicates a higher-capacity version. Always check the complete printer model and compatibility list before ordering.

Canon cartridge questions

Frequently asked questions

Helpful answers to common questions about compatible Canon ink and toner cartridges.

What is the difference between Canon PG and CL cartridges?

PG cartridges are generally black ink cartridges, while CL cartridges normally contain the colour inks. Some Canon printers use one black PG cartridge and one combined colour CL cartridge.

What does XL mean on a Canon ink cartridge?

XL indicates a higher-capacity cartridge that contains more ink and normally prints more pages than the standard version. Confirm that the XL version is listed for your printer before ordering.

What does the H mean in Canon 067H toner?

The H identifies the higher-capacity version of the toner range. It is designed to provide a greater page yield than the standard-capacity 067 cartridge, where supported by the printer.

Can I use compatible cartridges in my Canon printer?

Compatible cartridges are designed for the Canon printer models listed on the product page. Check the complete compatibility list before ordering and follow the installation guidance supplied with the cartridge.

Will compatible cartridges affect my Canon printer warranty?

Using a compatible cartridge does not automatically invalidate the printer warranty. A manufacturer may, however, decline responsibility for a fault it can show was directly caused by a third-party cartridge.

Why does my Canon printer say the ink is empty after replacement?

Some Canon printers may not immediately update the estimated ink level when a compatible cartridge is fitted. Follow any on-screen prompt to continue printing, and contact us if the printer will not accept the cartridge.

Can I replace Canon toner colours individually?

Most Canon colour laser printers use separate black, cyan, magenta and yellow toner cartridges. This normally allows only the depleted colour to be replaced, although all cartridges must remain installed and recognised.
