Understanding Brother cartridge codes

Brother toner cartridges normally begin with TN, while ink cartridges usually begin with LC. Drum units are separate components and commonly begin with DR.

A toner cartridge and drum unit can fit the same printer but perform different jobs. Check the code shown by the printer before ordering so you replace the correct component.

TN-247 High-capacity colour toner Separate black, cyan, magenta and yellow cartridges
TN-2420 High-capacity mono toner Used by selected Brother mono laser printers
LC-422XL High-capacity ink range Available as individual colours and multipacks
DR Separate Brother drum unit Not the same component as the toner cartridge

Toner and drum guidance

Brother toner and drum units are separate

Many Brother laser printers use a toner cartridge fitted into a reusable drum unit. They have different replacement intervals.

Replace the component named by the printer

A “Replace Toner” message normally requires a TN-series toner cartridge. A “Replace Drum” or “Drum End Soon” message normally requires the matching DR-series drum unit.

  • Toner contains the powder used to create the print.
  • The drum transfers the toner image onto the paper.
  • A new toner does not automatically reset a drum warning.
  • Some Brother models require a manual toner or drum reset.
Brother toner still showing empty after replacement?

Confirm the cartridge is fully installed and that all protective parts have been removed. Some Brother printers require the toner counter to be reset after fitting a replacement cartridge, particularly with certain TN-243 and TN-247 models.

Brother cartridge questions

Frequently asked questions

Helpful answers to common questions about compatible Brother ink, toner and drum units.

What is the difference between Brother TN-243 and TN-247?

TN-243 is the standard-capacity colour toner range, while TN-247 is the higher-capacity range for compatible Brother printers. Check whether your printer supports both ranges before ordering.

Is a Brother drum unit the same as a toner cartridge?

No. The toner cartridge contains toner powder, while the drum transfers the toner image onto the paper. Many Brother printers use the two components together, but they are replaced separately.

Why does my Brother printer still say Replace Toner?

Check that the cartridge is firmly installed and all transport parts have been removed. Some models require a manual toner reset after installation. The correct reset process depends on the exact printer model.

Can I replace Brother colour toners individually?

Yes. Brother colour laser printers normally use separate black, cyan, magenta and yellow toner cartridges, so you can replace only the colour that has run out.

What does XL mean on Brother ink cartridges?

XL indicates a higher-capacity ink cartridge that normally prints more pages than the standard version. Confirm that the XL range is compatible with your exact printer model.

Can I use compatible cartridges in my Brother printer?

Compatible cartridges are designed for the Brother printer models listed on the product page. Always check the full compatibility list before ordering.

Will compatible cartridges affect my Brother printer warranty?

Using a compatible cartridge does not automatically invalidate the printer warranty. A manufacturer may, however, decline responsibility for a fault it can show was directly caused by a third-party cartridge.
